On May 26, 2022, the first Avelo Airlines flight will take off from Raleigh-Durham International Airport bound for New Haven, Connecticut. From RDU to Fort Myers, FL, the airline will fly three times weekly beginning in November.
Since the airport opened in May, Raleigh-Durham International Airport has welcomed a new carrier, Avelo. Beginning November 10, Avelo Airlines will operate three weekly nonstop flights between RDU and Fort Myers, Florida. Neither of these locations will have access to any other carriers.
Avelo spokesperson Courtney Goff says the company treats the flights out of Fort Myers as seasonal, but they haven’t decided when they’ll terminate. Tickets can be purchased via the airline until April 20.
Goff said in an email, “Pending the demand, we see we may continue a little longer with it.” In the event that there is sufficient interest, the route could be extended to operate all year long. Plan on flying to Florida on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
In May, Avelo started offering service between RDU and its East Coast hub at Tweed-New Haven Airport in Connecticut five days a week. According to Goff, if demand drops during particular times of the year, the airline may cut the number of those flights.
But she added, “Right now bookings are doing well enough to sustain flying this frequency despite the expense of gasoline. Since its inaugural flight in the spring of 2021, the budget airline has been focusing on flying to less-frequented airports in and around major cities.
Earlier this year, CEO Andrew Levy stated the company intends to expand its service area beyond its current hub of RDU to include cities currently unserved by other airlines.
The airline claims that the lack of connecting flights reduces the number of passengers affected by weather-related cancellations and lost luggage. Fort Myers and Freeport in The Bahamas will join RDU’s list of nonstop destinations in November, bringing the total to 57 and equal the number before the COVID-19 outbreak began.
Due to a reduction in demand for air travel during the epidemic, there are now less than forty nonstop locations available from RDU. Another airline, Southwest, will begin service from RDU to Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport in September. United is the only carrier offering flights to George Bush Intercontinental Airport from the Houston area.

Next month, American Airlines will join Southwest on the route from Los Angeles to Phoenix with nonstop service. Beginning in January, American will join Frontier in offering daily direct flights to Cincinnati.
Next month, Spirit Airlines will join Delta, Frontier, and Southwest in offering service to Orlando International Airport
