McDonald’s intends to reopen in Kyiv and western Ukraine

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March, McDonald’s restaurants there were forced to close, but the fast food chain recently announced plans to reopen the restaurants there.

The quick-service restaurant chain expressed the hope that the action would contribute to the restoration of a “small but important sense of normalcy.”

The burger giant has announced that over the next few months, there will be a phased reopening in Kyiv and western Ukraine in areas that have been determined to be safe.

Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, Ukraine was home to more than a hundred McDonald’s restaurants.

Since then, the company has continued to make wage payments to over 10,000 employees.

In a message that was published on the company’s website, Senior Vice President Paul Pomroy stated that “We have spoken extensively to our employees who have expressed a strong desire to return to work and see our restaurants in Ukraine reopen, where it is safe and responsible to do so.” “We have spoken extensively to our employees who have expressed a strong desire to return to work and see our restaurants in Ukraine reopen,”

“In the most recent few months, the conviction that this would contribute to a diminished but nonetheless significant sense of normalcy has grown stronger. In addition, Ukrainian government representatives have stated that it is in the best interest of the Ukrainian people and the local economy for businesses to resume normal operations.”

As a result of the conflict, analysts anticipate that the Ukrainian economy will contract by at least 35% this year. This will disrupt exports, the destruction of vital infrastructure, and the closure of thousands of businesses.

At a meeting of western business leaders that Yale University hosted in June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a speech in which he encouraged western companies to invest in his nation.

Additionally, he has participated in the festivities commemorating the reopening of dozens of embassies in Kyiv, one of which was that of the United Kingdom in April.

McDonald’s stated that it was collaborating with its suppliers and contractors to get the restaurants back up and running as quickly as possible.

It has been reported that western brands such as KFC, Nike, and Zara have opened stores in the country. Other brands like these are also expected to follow suit.

In March, McDonald’s stopped all operations in Russia, and in May, the majority of its restaurants in Russia were sold to a local licensee.
